▼ Recently, the sample of 107 Maintenance Crew’s first armor conversion kit, the RG 78 2.0 Unit 7 Conversion Set, has arrived! Using the RG 78 2.0 as the base model and referencing Takigawa’s Unit 7 design drafts, this kit successfully recreates the color separation details and proportions seen in the concept art.
Of course, since they're already committing to Unit 7, not making the Full Armor version would be like installing an air conditioner without the outdoor unit… it simply wouldn’t make sense. I believe 107 must already have a full-armor plan in the works — we just need to wait patiently.
Today, let’s take a look at the basic configuration of this “Unit 7 toddler” first!

▼ Runners Overview
Since this is an early sample, it does not yet include the final packaging.
The set includes 9 runners, an impressive amount of parts for a 1/144-scale conversion kit.

▼ The sharpness of the details is excellent. Even the white parts show strong definition without panel lining. In typical domestic model fashion, about 90% of the gates are hidden gates.

▼ Weapon parts in dark gray have even crisper detailing.

▼ Some parts in the sample still have unusual gate placements, but after discussing with 107, they confirmed that the gate positions have already been revised for the final production batch. The retail version should be even more satisfying.

About 90% of the armor has been replaced with new parts. Compared to the RG 78 2.0, the appearance is more streamlined and the straight-built result looks great.
However, since this kit is still based on the RG 78 2.0 frame, the inherent “long torso” issue slightly affects Unit 7’s more robust silhouette.
That said, the compatibility between the new armor and Bandai’s base frame is excellent, with no major fitting issues.

▼ When compared to the original RG 78 2.0, the differences are immediately noticeable.

▼ Unit 7’s head is a completely new sculpt — none of the original parts were reused. The shape is highly accurate, though the face sits slightly recessed, making the yellow eye piece less prominent.

▼ The chest armor has also been redesigned, and the cockpit opening mechanism for Unit 7 is reproduced. Unfortunately, the 360-degree panoramic cockpit from the setting is not included.

▼ The limbs have seen major redesigns as well.The shoulders are entirely new. The arm armor adjusts the elbow proportions through coverage. On the legs, only the calves, knees, and ankle guards were modified, but the overall silhouette changes quite a bit.

▼ Despite the changes to the armor, the articulation remains just as good as the original, still capable of natural kneeling poses and various combat stances.

▼ Unit 7’s dedicated rifle is newly molded, fully recreating its details and featuring a movable auxiliary grip

▼ Unit 7 has always been a niche mobile suit, and official products for it are extremely rare. Coincidentally, Bandai recently announced a new HG version, while 107 has produced an RG conversion kit — both are uncommon offerings.
Which one to choose ultimately depends on how much you like this “Unit 7 kid.”
(And let’s hope 107 brings out the full armor version soon!).
